Summary
Ferrari North America, Inc. (Ferrari) is recalling certain 2022-2023 Ferrari 296 vehicles. The fuel tank connecting pipe may corrode due to unintended contact between the fuel tank connecting pipe and the high-voltage battery protection cover, potentially resulting in a fuel leak.
Remedy
Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until the remedy has been completed. Dealers will install a new fuel tank connecting pipe reinforced with a protective sleeve, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed July 7, 2023. Owners may contact Ferrari customer service at 1-201-816.2668. Ferrari’s number for this recall is RC 85.

Issue: Ferrari has determined that a defect related to motor vehicle safety may arise in some MY 2022 – 2023 Ferrari 296 GTB and MY 2023 Ferrari 296 GTS vehicles. The issue relates to some corrosion detected on the fuel tank connecting pipe due to the unintended contact between the fuel tank connecting pipe (made of aluminum) and the high-voltage battery protection cover (made of glass fibers and inox steel).
Ferrari decided to launch a recall campaign to remedy this potential issue and has notified NHTSA.
Ferrari is working on a repair to address this issue; at this time a repair is not available. Further information regarding the recall and availability of the spare parts necessary to perform the repair will be provided in the coming days.
Required Dealer Action:
- Effective immediately and until further notice, ALL MY 2022 – 2023 Ferrari 296 GTB and MY 2023 Ferrari 296 GTS are on mandatory stop-sale hold.
- DO NOT sell, offer for sale or lease, or allow demo/test drives of any of the subject MY 2022 – 2023 Ferrari 296 GTB and MY 2023 Ferrari 296 GTS vehicles. In the interest of customer safety and satisfaction, place all MY 2022 – 2023 Ferrari 296 GTB and MY 2023 Ferrari 296 GTS vehicles at your dealership in a secure area where they cannot be made available for sale, lease, trade or demonstrator use until a repair to address this issue is made available and has been performed.

New Vehicles in Dealer Inventory: It is a violation of federal law for a dealer to deliver a new motor vehicle or any new or used item of motor vehicle equipment (including a tire) covered by this notification under a sale or lease until the defect or noncompliance is remedied. By law, dealers must correct, prior to delivery for sale or lease, any vehicle that fails to comply with an applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard or that contains a defect relating to motor vehicle safety.
Pre-Owned Vehicles in Dealer Inventory: Dealers should not deliver any pre-owned vehicles in their inventory which are involved in a safety or compliance recall until the defect has been remedied.
RC 85 Chronology
During a pre-delivery inspection check performed on a vehicle in China on April 12, 2023 on a 296 GTB vehicle, Ferrari was made aware of a potential issue regarding the fuel tank connecting pipe. In particular, a slight fuel leakage was noted arising out of the fuel tank connecting pipe. Ferrari immediately began an investigation of the issue, during which Ferrari observed some corrosion on the connecting pipe in another vehicle. As a precautionary containment measure, Ferrari introduced insulating material on the fuel pipe to prevent contact between the pipe and other vehicle components on the production line on April 20, 2023 while its investigation continued. Through its investigation, Ferrari determined that the initially reported fuel leakage was due to a hole in the connecting pipe, and further determined, based on testing conducted between April 18 and the beginning of May 2023, that the detected hole was due to a design defect allowing corrosion arising from the unintended contact between the fuel tank connecting pipe (made of aluminum) and the high-voltage battery protection cover (made of glass fibers and inox steel). On May 3, 2023, Ferrari decided to launch a recall campaign to remedy this potential issue and notify NHTSA. For the recall, Ferrari shall replace the fuel tank connecting pipe installed on 296 model with a new connecting pipe reinforced with an anti-corrosive protective sleeve made of rubber. Ferrari conducted research to verify the number of warranty claims and determined that no warranty claims have been submitted for this issue. Furthermore, Ferrari has had no reports of any fires, fuel leaks, other incidents and/or deaths as a consequence of this issue.
